Angel Di Maria has shared the messages he sent his wife before the World Cup final.

Lionel Scaloni made the brave decision to start Di Maria and go with an attacking trident alongside Julian Alvarez and Lionel Messi.

And the decision paid off as Di Maria was absolutely brilliant during his 64 minutes on the pitch.

The 34-year-old won the penalty to allow Messi to open the scoring, bamboozling Ousmane Dembele with brilliant footwork.

It was Di Maria who then finished brilliantly after a quick counter-attack to put Argentina 2-0 ahead before half time.

The legendary winger was in tears during his celebration as his dream of winning the World Cup was getting closer and closer.

The final appeared to be in the bag when Di Maria was eventually replaced with 25 minutes of normal time remaining.

Job done.

However, Kylian Mbappe’s incredible late double forced the final into extra-time.

Messi thought he had won the final in extra-time but that man, Mbappe, popped up with another equaliser in the final minutes.

But Argentina were finally confirmed world champions after a dramatic penalty shootout victory.

Di Maria could finally celebrate.

But he knew all along that Argentina would – and that he would score.

That’s because, in a text message to his wife before the final he predicted Argentina would win and that he would score.

The whole conversation went:

Angel Di Maria: “I’m going to come out world champion love. It is written. And I’m going to score the goal. Because it’s written just like at the Maracana and Wembley.”

Jorgelina Cardoso: “That message makes my body loose…. I don’t know what the f**k to tell you.”

Angel Di Maria: “You don’t have to say anything. Go and enjoy tomorrow because we are going to be world champions. Because we all 26 of us who are here and our families deserve it.”

Jorgelina Cardoso: “😭”

Angel Di Maria: “You know what’s beautiful love. Tomorrow we are world champions. It’s written. I know I feel it. It’s our love.”

Angel Di Maria: “Who’s gonna pick you up, love, when it ends? Do you know? In Rosario?”

He called it.

Okay, he probably would have hoped it wouldn’t be quite so dramatic but he was spot on. Argentina did win and he did score.

Di Maria dedicates Instagram post to his family

Di Maria dedicated an Instagram post to his wife, Jorgelina Cardoso, and his two daughters. Accompanying four images of the Di Maria family with the World Cup, he wrote: “They never let me give up. They were always there beating me to death. I just want to say thank you so much for always being there for me. I love them with all my soul. CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD.”
