Former Real Madrid striker Nicolas Anelka admits he feels for Karim Benzema over his France snub.
Benzema hasn't played with Les Bleus for over four years after becoming embroiled in an alleged blackmail plot.
Asked about the snub by France coach Didier Deschamps, Anelka told L'Equipe: "It's sad for him, for sure, because he wants to come back and he has shown that he is one of the best in the world, but it's Deschamps' choice.
"For France, Benzema would certainly be a plus. They're a great team already, but that would be even better. But it is Deschamps' decision, I know the coach well and we must respect him.
"I think Karim needs to focus on Real Madrid and he does, he gets better every year. It's a shame for him."
