Anderlecht defender Zeno Debast has revealed that there was contact between the Belgian Club and PSV Eindhoven over a possible transfer during the summer. The 19-year-old Belgium international was a top target for PSV during their search for a new centre-back. In the end, no agreement was reached between the two clubs and the player’s price tag was deemed to be too high.

Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad about the situation, Debast said ‘There has indeed been contact, but the parties have to agree and that has not happened. Now that PSV qualified for the Champions League, that would have been nice. Maybe it was the moment to take the step, but that also depends on the project, the club, everything. It had to be the ideal step for me.’

Anderlecht’s asking price for Zeno Debast was reportedly set at €15m, which was too high at the time. Debast doesn’t see a problem with staying in Brussels for another season. ‘I don’t consider it a step backwards that I stayed with Anderlecht. I can still make a lot of progress alongside Jan Vertonghen’, continues the youngster, who will now play in front of an experienced goalkeeper in Kasper Schmeichel.

After deciding not to sign Zeno Debast, PSV continued their search for a centre-back, adding several names to their shortlist. In the final few hours of the transfer window, PSV reached an agreement with Southampton to sign German defender Armel Bella-Kotchap. The 21-year-old joined the club on a season-long loan with no option to buy.
