Following a disastrous 2023/24 Championship campaign, Birmingham City were relegated to League One despite beating Norwich City on the last day of the season.

Three points were not enough for the Blues on the final day as survival was out of their hands and all three of Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle also won.

The St Andrew's outfit initially started the season in a positive fashion, and were sitting in the play-off positions following a 3-1 win over local rivals West Brom in October under the management of John Eustace.

However, Blues owner Tom Wagner and Chief Executive Officer Garry Cook made the decision to dismiss Eustace of his duties, replacing him with former Derby County manager Wayne Rooney.

Rooney oversaw a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough during his first game in the Birmingham dugout on 21st October, which unfortunately set the tone for the rest of the 38-year-old's tenure, as he would fail to win a game until 25th November.

The England legend was sacked by the Blues on 2nd January, after winning just two of his 15 games in charge of the club, a poor run which saw the side sitting on the brink of the relegation zone.

Rooney's poor tenure as manager ensured that his successor would have a tough task on their hands keeping the Blues in the Championship, and sadly, Tony Mowbray, who succeeded Rooney, had to leave his role in mid-February due to illness, leaving Gary Rowett in charge on an interim basis.

But Rowett was unable to maintain the Blues' second-tier status, as his side were relegated to League One, while ironically, Eustace kept Blackburn in the Championship.

The St Andrew's side are now on the hunt for a new manager, and according to Football Insider, they are interested in former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior.

Talking exclusively to Football League World, former England midfielder and pundit Carlton Palmer said: "Birmingham City are said to be monitoring the situation with Liam Rosenior.

"It's looking more likely than not that Tony Mowbray will be unable to return to the club for the start of the season, which is really, really sad news for Birmingham City and Tony Mowbray.

"I really have a lot of time for Tony Mowbray as a bloke, and it's sad to see, and we all hope he recovers from his illness well.

"So, Birmingham City unfortunately, with the sacking of John Eustace, the situation with Wayne Rooney, they ended up getting relegated to League One.

"Birmingham City will be an attractive proposition for anybody, because they should have the funds to kick on and get promotion back to the Championship.

"Whether they could tempt Liam Rosenior to drop down to League One, with a project remains to be seen.

"It would be an attractive proposition, you would expect Birmingham City to be at the top end of the table, pushing for promotion back to the Championship next season.

"But I'm sure Liam Rosenior has cut his crop in the Championship, he's shown he's capable of managing in the Championship, so I think he would like to remain in the Championship in some form, but Birmingham would be an attractive proposition for him, and I'm sure Tom Wagner could tempt Liam if he's given the tools to do the job and get them promoted back at the first attempt.

"As I said, I think there's going to be a lot of interest in Liam Rosenior, the next job he takes is important for him and his career, although you can't say anything other than what a fantastic job he's done at Hull.

"Whichever club gets him, needs to get him in now so he can start getting on with his work.

"If it's Birmingham City, then there's a lot of work to do with the financial fair play with them going down to League One, players leaving and the recruitment of players for the season, but this would be an unbelievable appointment if Birmingham City could pull this off."

Blues will have to stave off fellow interest in Rosenior

Rosenior would undoubtedly be a very strong appointment for the Blues, who are attempting to earn promotion back to the Championship from League One at the first time of asking come the 2024/25 campaign.

But in order to get their man on board, they will have to fend off other clubs who are likely to be interested in the 39-year-old who was nominated for the Championship manager of the season award, while he has already turned down interest from Plymouth, according to TalkSport.
