After emerging with Argentine side Vélez Sarsfield, Santiago Cáseres hopped over to Spain to live the European dream with Villarreal.
Following a decent first year with the club, the 23-year-old has not been in Javier Calleja’s plans and Cáseres came to Mexico to join the iconic Club América on loan in January.
However, he could have landed back in his home country. In an interview with Argentine outlet TNT, Cáseres revealed that the two biggest clubs in Argentina came calling.
“My representatives received phone calls from River Plate and Boca Juniors, but that did not happen,” he said.
“They only stayed on calls. There was an approach that did not evolve.
“At first, I did not see it as accurate because my goal was to stay away from the country to continue improving. After interest started to grow, I started to pay more attention.
“But it was only on phone calls. When I knew it was not going to happen, I was calm and today I am very good at América.”
After taking some time to adjust, Cáseres has started to make himself a part of the starting XI, starting his last two Liga MX matches and all three CONCACAF Champions League games.
