Club América earned bragging rights on Saturday after a 2-1 victory over rivals Chivas.
Scorers: Martín 4′ (P), Zendejas 51′; Calderón 62′
The stage was set for a thriller at the Estadio Azteca as rivals Club América and Chivas went head-to-head in the Súper Clásico.
The drama kicked off early, too, as the hosts were handed a penalty less than five minutes into the game.
Luis Olivas fouled Henry Martín in the box and the striker made no mistake from the spot for his 10th goal of the season.
The visitors then pushed to find an equaliser with a free-kick from Alexis Vega and a bicycle kick from Ángel Zaldivar falling short.
With only a handful of chances on target between either side, things remained 1-0 at the break and everything was still up for grabs.
Coming out into the second half it was América who ramped up the pressure in front of goal and Martín teed up Alejandro Zendejas for 2-0.
But over time, Chivas grew into the match and threatened a comeback calling goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa into action.
The man to finally find the back of the net for the visitors was Cristian Calderón despite VAR thinking the goal was offside.
With a comeback on the cards, the visitors then took control of the match but could not find a late equaliser despite 17 shots, more possession and seven minutes of stoppage time.
Additionally, substitute Federico Viñas did almost add a third for the hosts but his efforts hit the crossbar while Chivas’ Fernando Beltrán was shown red in the dying moments.
In the end, the 2-1 win means América have a one-point lead at the top of Liga MX with one match to go while Chivas are seventh.
