América got their 2022 Apertura campaign under way with a scoreless draw against Atlas on Saturday.

In a first half of few chances at the Estadio Azteca, it was Atlas who came closest to breaking the deadlock when Jonathan Herrera hit the upright just moments before the interval.

The Azulcrema had a golden opportunity to open their account early in the second half but a heavy touch by substitute Iker Moreno allowed Atlas goalkeeper Camilo Vargas to advance and snuff out the danger.

Atlas had an extremely worrying moment in the closing stages when Mauro Manotas had to be taken from the field.

The Colombian attacker, who had only come on to make his debut after joining from Tijuana during the close season, looked to have sustained a serious knee injury from a non-contact situation.

La Academia almost stole all three points in the final minute but Julián Quiñones had his brilliant effort beaten away by América goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

While América would have wanted a winning start to the season, a draw at home to the side who have won the last two Liga MX titles may turn out to be a decent result.
