Atlético Madrid star Álvaro Morata has on Sunday cast his future with the club firmly back into doubt.

The name of frontman Morata has of course positioned itself front and centre in the media chatter in Spain’s capital for several weeks now.

This comes amid widespread speculation that the 31-year-old could soon be on the move once more.

Morata himself appeared to have put such chatter very much to bed last week, in taking to social media, to seemingly reaffirm his commitment to the Atlético cause:

“I can’t imagine what it must be like to win with this shirt and I won’t stop until I achieve it,” he wrote, as cited by Mundo Deportivo.

In turn, it will no doubt come as something of a surprise to those of a Rojiblancos persuasion to hear that, mere days on, Morata has moved to backtrack on such comments.

Speaking in an interview with Cuatro’s El Desmarque, (as per Marca), the Spanish national team captain responded to fresh questions on his future by explaining:

“In football, nothing is certain. We’ll have to see how we finish (at Euro 2024) and all these things and then we’ll see.”

Drawn directly on his recent hints towards staying put in Madrid, Morata continued:

“It’s my opinion from the bottom of my heart, but as I often say, there are times when it’s complicated for me in Spain. I’m fed up with the discourse of victimhood, of me complaining, of… I just want this to end in the best possible way and enjoy it, because it could also be my last tournament with the national team.”
