Italian football journalist Alfredo Pedullà ridicules those who are suggesting that the transfer ban imposed on Lazio can be a blessing in disguise for Maurizio Sarri.
The transfer expert and columnist is a good friend of the returning Biancocelesti manager who hasn’t been able to bolster his squad this summer. The 66-year-old had asked the club to recruit at least three new signings to make the team compatible with his 4-3-3 tactical system, but it proved to be an impossible request, with COVISOC preventing the club from signing any players.
In the meantime, some observers are trying to see the bright side of this unpleasant situation, noting how the manager will at least be able to work with an all-too-familiar group. Nevertheless, Pedullà insisted that this transfer ban is anything but an ‘advantage’ for Sarri, as he articulated in his interview with The Italian Football Podcast.
This is not a nice situation. Roma have signed Wesley, Bailey and Ferguson, Milan signed Jashari and Modric, Inter signed new layers, so did Juventus, whereas Lazio haven’t signed anyone. Then those who want to be a bit shallow, in my opinion, say that it is an advantage to have a group you know well. But it’s not an advantage at all when the others are strengthening. It is not an advantage at all and it is a very Italian way to belittle the gravity of the situation.
The Italian football expert insists that the traditional Serie A powerhouses all boast better squads than Lazio’s.
What advantage is this? Everyone is strengthening and you are not. You can count on a group you know well, but there are teams that are stronger: Napoli, Milan, Juventus and even Fiorentina. They have all had a transfer market.
Sarri has decided to take on this very difficult situation. No one had told him that the transfer market would be blocked.
On the other hand, Pedullà has been amazed by the Lazio supporters in Rome who flocked to buy season tickets. The Biancocelesti are even closing in on a record number of sales, despite the non-existent transfer campaign. The journalist thus attributes this revived passion to the fans’ great belief in Sarri’s work.
In Rome, 30,000 season tickets have been bought by Lazio fans. Incredible. 30,000 season tickets sold without a single signing. It is incredible, because usually, season tickets are bought when you sign players. Evidently, the fans have really appreciated Sarri’s return. There are those who say that Sarri could have the excuse of not having signed any players if things go badly, but Maurizio is a coach that wants to do well.
Lazio will kickstart their Serie A campaign this Sunday with an away fixture to Como, while their first home game will ensue on August 31, when they’ll host Hellas Verona at the Stadio Olimpico.
