Alexia Putellas has set a new record by becoming Barcelona Femení’s all-time top scorer after her clutch performance against Atlético Madrid.
The Spanish international netted her 182nd goal for the club she has dedicated more than a decade to. As a result of the historical goal, Barça added an important three points to their tally to stay top of the Liga F table.
The Catalan is learning how to play in a new position, as a ‘false 9’. Last season the midfield trio of Keira Walsh, Aitana Bonmatí and Patri Guijarro worked so well. Jonatan Giráldez found a solution to keep the magic that was achieved last season, though. After coming back from an ACL injury, the coach decided to add Alexia’s magic to the forward line.
The player identified with the number 11 on her back is scoring more goals than she is used to (which was more than is ‘normal’ for a midfielder). She has celebrated three goals in five matches this season and has scored on three consecutive occasions.
Alexia is followed by Jenni Hermoso, with 181 goals. After them, there’s Sonia Bermúdez, who scored 123 goals, Asisat Oshoala (110), and Mariona Caldentey, (95). The Ballon d’Or winner born in Mollet del Vallés has already played 404 matches for Barcelona.
These 182 goals are divided across five competitions. She scored 131 of them in the national league, while 20 in the Queen’s Cup. In the Champions League she celebrated 19 goals, while contributing eight and four in the Copa Catalunya and Supercopa, respectively.
Alexia still has a lot to show. Goals, assists, dribbles, speeches… and Barça fans hope that she will show her quality wearing the blue and red jersey for many years to come, and continue to make history.
