Alex Iwobi has explained why he made a gesture which appeared to suggest Rennes defender Hamari Traoré had bad breath on Thursday night.
Arsenal won 3-0 at the Emirates to book their place in the Europa League quarter-final but Iwobi came in for heavy criticism for his conduct towards his opponent.
However, the Nigerian international has now explained why he did what he did, and says he won’t be saying sorry to Traoré.
“The guy was fouling me, cussing me and my mum,” wrote Iwobi in response to a fan who asked him to publicly apologise via Snapchat.
“He was putting middle fingers up at me. They won’t catch that or say anything about that but they will quickly say something to me, I’m sorry bro but I’ aint…”
Arsenal don’t play again until they host Newcastle in the Premier League on 1 April, but Iwobi will be back in action when Nigeria take on Seychelles in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier next week.
