Whilst 16 players from Bayer Leverkusen’s squad are currently away with their national teams, one of their standout players this season has still not received his call-up.

Left-back Alejandro Grimaldo has once again missed out on a call-up to the Spanish national side.

Grimaldo has been vital to Bayer Leverkusen’s success this season as he has produced two goals and three assists from playing in the left wing-back role. His side currently sit on top of the Bundesliga table.

Despite making 21 youth international appearances, he has yet to earn a senior cap for his country.

The Spaniard spoke for the first time about his disappointment in missing out on the national squad on Tuesday.

“A few years ago, I probably would have been very angry. But not so with age. On the contrary, it motivates me even more. The Spanish national team has excellent players, but I actually expected and hoped that I would be invited because I am in very good form at the moment. But I will continue to work to achieve this. Maybe it will work out one day,” said Grimaldo.

Almost two weeks ago and before Grimaldo missed out once again, his club head coach Xabi Alonso also expressed his opinion on the left back and recommended that a call up was necessary.

“I can’t explain why he hasn’t played for Spain yet, but I would endorse it,” said Alonso.

“Grimaldo totally deserves a call-up. If he carries on like this, he’ll be invited to the national team. I certainly hope he is.”
