Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 9 games

Article image:Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 9 games

The Baggies go into the second international break handily placed in 4th spot, just two points off top spot, albeit on a run of three games without a win. Albion were better in the goalless draw with Millwall than they had been against Boro, but they still couldn’t find a way through a determined Lions’ back line.

The Hawthorns faithful haven’t seen too many goals so far this season – only three in total in the first five home games which is a new, unwanted, club record. The previous record was four in 1921 when all four goals were scored by the opposition as Albion drew two games 0-0 and lost the other three. That is the only other time that an Albion side has scored fewer than three goals in their opening five home matches. On two occasions, Albion have scored just three goals in their opening five home games, most recently in 2011 under Roy Hodgson.

Only once before has an Albion side conceded just once in their opening five home games of a league season, and that was more than a century ago. In 1907, the Throstles won their first four home games to nil before drawing 1-1 with Leicester Fosse in game five.
