A hard-fought point at Bramall Lane was the least that Chris Brunt’s team deserved from what was an entertaining match, with some excellent performances from the Baggies team. Jayson Molumby was the stand out performer but Ousmane Diakité was also very good bar the bad touch that led to the Blades’ opening goal, while the back four were all outstanding. Furthermore, Grant’s goal was superbly taken with an unwitting assist for Tom Fellows that puts him top of the list in the Championship.
It was Albion’s twelfth draw of the season that matches the club record at this stage, set by Alan Buckley’s team in 1996/97 although that team had only won six games and sat in 16th place in the table. It also keeps them on track to match the unwanted Football League record of 23 draws in a campaign.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, Albion have won only one of their last eleven games on New Year’s Day, a 1-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League in 2014, although they did beat Reading 1-0 in their first match of 2023 which took place on 2nd January thanks to a goal from Daryl Dike.
A few days before, game 25 took place on 29th December and was also against Preston North End at the Hawthorns – that resulted in a 2-0 victory thanks to a double from Okay Yokuşlu.
