Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 2 games

Article image:Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 2 games

Albion opened their league campaign with two victories for the first time since 2017, and the first time in the second tier since 1997. On that occasion, Ray Harford was in charge at the Hawthorns and a 2-1 home win over Tranmere Rovers was followed up by a 3-2 victory at Gresty Road with Lee Hughes scoring a late double to secure the points against Crewe Alexandra.

More importantly, it is the Baggies first win on the road of 2025 with their last away victory coming at Hull City in November last year. With skipper, Jed Wallace, scoring the second, it means that he has already matched his goal tally for last season with his only strike of 2024/25 coming in the 5-1 win over Portsmouth in January – to be fair, he did only play 795 minutes of league football last season, starting just six games.

For two seasons in succession, a Baggies player has scored three goals in the opening two league games – last season, Josh Maja scored an opening day hat trick at QPR. The previous occasion that happened was in 1991 was Don Goodman scored twice in the 6-3 win over Exeter City on the opening day before scoring the winner at Darlington the following week. Before that, we have to go back to 1964 when Tony Brown followed up an opening day strike in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford with a hat trick at the Hawthorns in a 4-1 win over Sunderland. Both of those players were, of course, commentating at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday afternoon!
