You won’t find many people more popular in the city of Newcastle than Alan Shearer.

To be honest, you may not find any at all.

Shearer, a local lad, is idolised in the city thanks to his heroics for Newcastle United during a goal-filled 10 years at the club.

The 51-year-old signed for the Magpies in 1996 and went on to score 206 goals in 405 appearances before retiring from the sport in 2006.

And as well as being a sensational footballer for Newcastle, Shearer possessed something equally as important to the fans – a deep hatred of Sunderland.

The striker-turned-pundit hasn’t got any time for his beloved club’s arch nemesis, as he proved when he was a guest on The One Show.

During the show, Adrian Chiles presented Shearer with a Sunderland shirt that had his name and iconic number nine on the back.

Shearer was then asked if he would wear the jersey for Sport Relief, to which he replied: “I would rather give you a lot of money than put that on.”

Fair play, Alan. He was ready to get his chequebook out and write some big numbers down in order to avoid wearing the Sunderland shirt.

Yeah, Shearer’s certainly not a fan of the Mackems and in a recent interview with Manchester United icon Gary Neville on The Overlap, he couldn’t resist taking a shot at them.

Shearer’s cheeky dig at Sunderland on The Overlap

Neville asked the Newcastle legend: “Best thing about Sunderland?”

Shearer replied: “Is there anything good about Sunderland?”

Neville said: “Anything?”

Shearer responded: “They’re in League One?”

Neville burst out laughing, before adding: “That’s brutal!”

Alan just couldn’t resist, could he? Sunderland will be hoping they can finally achieve promotion from League One this season, although they’re currently two points behind second-place Wigan (who have four games in hand) and 11 behind table-toppers Rotherham (who also have a game in hand).

It looks like it’ll be play-offs or bust once again…
