Blues are expected to be a force in the Championship next season with the financial resources possessed by owner Tom Wagner, with the West Midlands-based club expected to be heavily backed in order to fight for immediate promotion to the top-flight.

It could prove to be a special season for all connected at Knighthead Park, and Birmingham are making early inroads already this summer to ensure the squad is as well-equipped as possible for the relentless 46-game campaign.

Birmingham are already putting themselves in line for one of the top talents in League One this season, but the club will have to navigate past significant interest if they are to get their desired target.

According to a report by Give Me Sport, Birmingham City have offered Kwame Poku a contract to link up with Chris Davies in the West Midlands next season, but the club will have to be wary of interest from the likes of Sunderland and Sheffield United for the 23-year-old.

After smashing the League One points record, Blues will have some ambitious targets to bolster competition within the current ranks, with Poku firmly in their sights.

Birmingham’s director of football, Craig Gardner, has reportedly pitched the club’s offer to Poku and his agent over Zoom, but Sunderland ending their exodus from the Premier League could be a problem as the Black Cats will have additional spending and pulling power.

Another report from Give Me Sport has outlined how Scottish duo Celtic and Rangers are also eyeing up a move for the winger, which would trigger UEFA’s compensation payout.

This is something Peterborough’s director of football Barry Fry will be hoping for, with compensation only allowed to be claimed if Poku's next club is in the United Kingdom.

Kwame Poku was one of the biggest forward threats in League One this season, with the 23-year-old raising the eyebrows of so many EFL clubs after his 12 goals and eight assists from 27 league appearances.

One of the few positives to Posh’s dismal 18th-placed finish this campaign, it appears the club have come to terms that he will be leaving in the summer, and Birmingham have been clever to recognise that and pursue a deal as quickly as possible.

But Sunderland throwing their hat into the ring must limit Birmingham's confidence that they can compete with the Black Cats’ terms, given the Wearside outfit will be back playing Premier League football next season and have received such a significant injection of cash for their Wembley success.
