Alan Shearer has opened up on his disappointment at not getting another crack at the Newcastle job following his brief stint as manager.
In April 2009, he was hired late in the season in a panicked and ultimately ill-fated late move to help beat the drop but was unable to do so.
Following the relegation, Shearer expected to remain in charge and lead his beloved club back to the Premier League but wasn’t asked to do so as Chris Hughton was handed the gig instead.
“I thought that even despite what happened, I loved the eight games I had and I still thought after that I was going to stay on and have another crack at getting them back up,” Shearer told the Match of the Day podcast.
“I think, if anything, what the eight games taught me is to appreciate how difficult a job it is. I have huge respect for the guys who are in there as managers.
“Particularly the ones who have been in there year after year. It is incredibly tough.”
That said, Shearer believes his chance to be a permanent Newcastle boss has came and went and doesn’t expect to sit in the St James’ Park hot seat again.
“Would I like to have go crack at it? No, not now. I don’t think that at all now,” he admitted.
“That was then and this is now. I’m happy in what I’m doing but I don’t see any chance of me going back into it now.”
