Egyptian giants Al Ahly have sacked head coach Jose Riveiro in the wake of the Red Devils’ surprising 2-0 defeat to the reigning African champions Pyramids FC in the Egyptian Premier League on Saturday evening.
The Spanish mentor had a tumultuous spell in Cairo, managing to secure only one win in the first four league outings he oversaw at the club. He drew the other two matches and registered a solitary loss. Overall, the 49-year-old tactician won one match, drew four and lost two.
As a result, the club’s passionate supporters voiced their displeasure, calling for Riveiro to be sacked, with Ahly in an unfamiliar residence on the table as they are currently in a dismal 12th place on the log standings.
The defending champions are seven points adrift of the summit of the table, with fierce rivals Zamalek SC at the top of the table with five points accumulated after an impressive start to the season. On the other hand, Ahly trail Pyramids by three points.
This prompted the Red Devils’ hierarchy to pull the plug on the Spaniard’s project in Cairo. The club president along with the executives were reportedly under immense pressure to find a solution to the precarious situation.
It is believed that former Zamalek coach Jose Gomez, who is now in charge of Saudi Pro League club Al-Fateh, has been earmarked as a potential candidate to succeed Riveiro in the hotseat along with an unnamed European coach.
The former Orlando Pirates mentor has been on the backfoot since day one as he failed to register a win at the revamped 32-team FIFA Club World Cup that was staged in the United States of America (USA).
Ahly played to a goalless draw against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in their opening match of the global showpiece, before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Brazilian outfit Palmeiras. In addition, the record 12-time African champions drew 4-4 with FC Porto of Portugal in their penultimate match.
