Nathan Ake says he couldn’t be prouder of his team-mates after the hard-fought win over Chelsea set up an all-Manchester FA Cup final for the second year running.

Ake was part of a City defence that had to battle and ride their luck on occasion, but the Dutch defender believes the team’s fighting spirit and determination was evident throughout, in spite of a gruelling four days of action.

“It was hard work but we’re so happy we could get it done,” said Ake.

“I didn’t play on Wednesday, but you see so many players who played 120 minutes and they are running around and still wanting to win the game and give everything.

“I’m so proud of everyone – the way we worked and fought for this win, I’m so proud and happy for everyone.

“Chelsea are a very tough team – they have a lot of pace on the counter and very strong. It was never going to be easy.

“There was sloppy defending sometimes and you could see the tiredness on the ball, but the most important thing was the heart, and we gave everything to make sure we got to the final.

“Everyone was running for each other – it was a team collective, and everyone gave their all to keep the clean sheet and win the game. Everyone is happy and so proud.”

Ake says it was vital the Blues dug deep to reach the FA Cup final having been beaten by Real Madrid on penalties in midweek.

But he added playing Chelsea in such a huge game was exactly what was needed to refocus tired minds and legs.

“It was a tough one to take and it’s been a tough week – especially in the manner of how it ended in the Champions League,” he said.

“We knew we had to switch very quick, the bodies were tired, but we are very happy we could have a last push to reach another final.

“There’s so much left to play for. Beating Chelsea was very important and everyone was mentally ready.

“There’s still a little way to go. For now, the most important thing is to rest for a couple of days, switch off the mind and get ready for the last games of the season.

“We are going to push until the end.”
