With football on pause for the foreseeable future, we’re beginning to hear many stories from footballers past and present about rejecting transfer offers from other clubs, making some supporters wonder ‘what could have been?’
Danny Blind is an Ajax icon, making the third-most appearances in club history (493), but his career could have been much, much different.
In an interview with Ziggosport, the Dutch legend revealed that he had the chance to leave for other opportunities but decided to stay at Ajax from 1986 to 1999 until he hung up his boots.
“If you haven’t experienced it, you can’t miss it,” he said.
“When we flourished with Ajax, I was 34, 35. I was able to go abroad when I was 28 and 29, but those clubs were of a different quality.
“They were Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain – which was not the club it is today – and Real Zaragoza. I did not choose that.
“I chose sporting wise, and that was to stay with Ajax. That has not done me any harm.”
As a player, Blind took home five Eredivisie titles, four KNVB Cups, 2 Johan Cruyff shields, the 1995 Champions League crown, and the 1992 Uefa Cup.
