De Telegraaf reports that Gerónimo Rulli missed Ajax’s training session on Monday afternoon. The Argentinian goalkeeper stayed in Spain with his wife, missed his flight and is now on his way back to Amsterdam.

Three days after head coach Maurice Steijn made Rulli his first-choice goalkeeper, it’s been made clear that the 31-year-old is fed up with the lack of reinforcements at Ajax. Almost three weeks ago, before transferring to Fenerbahçe, Dusan Tadic expressed his concerns to the club about their struggle to sign new players. It’s been reported in the Spanish press that Gerónimo Rulli is now unhappy about the same situation and would like to return to Villarreal.

Last Saturday Ajax lost 3-1 to Augsburg in a preseason friendly. Rulli featured in goal and failed to impress. Shortly after the match, it was announced that Ajax were showing interest in Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper Nick Olij. This would give Rulli some extra competition as Ajax head into the new season. However, if Rulli requests to leave the club, Ajax will have to look for another goalkeeper.
