Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar has resigned from his position after a disappointing 2022-23 season.

The 52-year-old joined the Dutch outfit as marketing director in 2012 but was later promoted to the role of CEO.

His time at the club has seen them progress to the 2019 Champions League semi-final, where they eventually lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

De Godenzonen also enjoyed great success at home in recent years, winning three of the last four Eredivisie titles.

However, following the departure of Erik ten Hag last summer, Ajax endured an underwhelming campaign.

They finished third in the league table – their worst finish since the 2008-09 season.

Vder Sar has faced plenty of criticism from fans for the club’s massive drop in fortunes, and he has decided to step down from his position.

“After almost eleven years on the board, I am done,” he said in a statement on Ajax.nl. “We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.

“I am very grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax, and what we have achieved and been through together.

“I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things. It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign.”

Van der Sar has regularly been linked with Manchester United who have been looking to appoint a sporting director.

But the Dutchman always insisted he was committed to Ajax and couldn’t take the job.

However, now he is leaving his position at the Johan Cruyff Arena, United could make him an offer.

Van der Sar played as a goalkeeper for the Red Devils between 2005 and 2011, registering over 260 senior appearances.

His time at Old Trafford saw him lifting four Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.
