Nicolas Jackson will be banned for the rest of Chelsea’s season after picking up a red card yesterday against Newcastle.
It’s a moment of madness which will have long term effects – he will now be banned for the final 2 games of the season just when Chelsea need him most.
Nicolas Jackson red card against Newcastle.
The striker’s ban rules him out this weekend against Manchester United, and he’s not the only one we will be missing. Jadon Sancho will join us on a permanent deal from the Red Devils in the summer, but for now he’s still on loan, so Premier League rules prevent him playing too.
Sancho hasn’t been in the first choice front 3 of late, but he’s been the 4th man up. That’s two players who would potentially be in the front line unavailable. Enzo Maresca’s comments post-game make it pretty clear that backup striker Marc Guiu, who has been out injured for 3 months, won’t be ready either.
It will be very interesting to see who the Chelsea coach goes for. He’s been using Tyrique George as Jackson’s alternate in the Conference League, but has been a little more cautious about starting him in the league.
Will George finally get his moment now? Or will be see Pedro Neto used up top, as we did on a few occasions back in the spring? Either way, it now looks pretty likely that George gets a start in the two biggest games of the season in some capacity.
That’s a well deserved reward for a great season of progress from the youngster. Who knows – maybe he will even end up with a moment to top that equaliser against Fulham a few weeks ago?
