Sheffield Wednesday held high-flying Wycombe to a draw at the weekend and one player from that game, Adebayo Akinfenwa, has revealed to The Wednesday ‘Til I Die Podcast just who he believed was their best player in that fixture.

The Owls have gone on a good run of form under Darren Moore and have been hard to beat in the last few weeks. The club are now pushing towards the play-off spots and a win over Portsmouth in their next league tie would propel them into the top six.

In their last game against Wycombe, they managed to come away with a point despite Gareth Ainsworth’s side being well amongst the contenders for an automatic promotion spot too.

Quiz: 30 questions about Sheffield Wednesday’s best strikers from the last 5 years – Can you score 30/30?

It was Anis Mehmeti who gave the away side the lead before Olamide Shodipo brought his team back into the game. Wednesday then took the lead after a superb strike from Josh Windass, only for Jordan Obita to equalise and ensure both sides came away with something.

Akinfenwa came on during that fixture and although he couldn’t bag a goal and give his team the win, he was full of praise for the opposition – and even identified who he thought their best player was.

That honour went to Jack Hunt, who is in the middle of his first season with the Owls (and is in the middle of only his third season at League One level too).

He heaped praise on several Owls’ members but Hunt was the one who he singled out as their best player in the game before he was eventually subbed off. Speaking to the podcast, he said: “Everybody knows about Barry Bannan but, having said that, I thought [Jack] Hunt was your best player before he was taken off.”

It’s tall praise from a man who has been around the EFL and has come up against some decent opposition. Hunt will certainly be hoping he can keep up his good form for the remainder of the season.

The Verdict

Jack Hunt is certainly shining for Sheffield Wednesday and is already a first-team regular. Darren Moore has a good squad on his hands and they’ll certainly fancy themselves to be amongst the play-off places come the end of the season.

Whether they can secure a place in the top six will come down to the work put in by Hunt and the other key players in the side. If they can keep on the top of their game, then a play-off spot should certainly be attainable.
