Aberdeen held firm for the opening 30 minutes, sitting deep and allowing Celtic plenty of possession, before Greg Taylor drilled a rising shot just over the crossbar.

Just before half time, Celtic broke through the Dons' rearguard and Cameron Carter-Vickers' glancing header was deflected into the net by Alfie Dorrington.

Celtic kept pushing for a decisive second as Arne Engels' thumping strike crashed off the post and Taylor's stinging effort flew narrowly over the bar.

However, Aberdeen levelled late on after Schmeichel failed to deal with Shayden Morris' low cross and the Celtic goalkeeper sent the ball into his own net - sending the game into extra time.

Both sides had chances in extra time, with Dante Polvara volleying over the crossbar from 10 yards out and Celtic substitute Jeffery Schlupp rattling the crossbar from a fierce strike.

The game was eventually settled on penalties and Dimitar Mitov made the final save, keeping out Alistair Johnston's spot-kick to seal the cup for Aberdeen.
