FLW has been speaking with our Huddersfield Town pundit on who the Terriers' biggest bargain signing has been.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Huddersfield Town icon Christopher Schindler has been labelled as the greatest bargain signing for the Terriers by FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit, Graeme Rayner,
The Terriers have had their fair share of hits and misses when it comes to signing players.
Jonathan Hogg has been a great servant to the club for more than 10 seasons. On the other hand, you have the Adama Diakhaby's of this world.
Schindler, however, is certainly up there. The German central defender joined the club from 1860 Munich in 2016.
Reported to be around £1.8 million, Schindler joined the West Yorkshire outfit at the age of 26, after establishing himself in 2. Bundesliga, racking up 152 appearances and finding the net four times.
While at Huddersfield, the 6'2 German became a fan favourite at the club and amassed 175 appearances in his time.
FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, has praised Schindler for his time at the club and believes that he has earned the club legend status.
"It has to be Christopher Schindler, we paid £1.8 million, which at the time I believe was a club record transfer.
"He was the best defender I've ever seen at the club. A Rolls Royce defender, and a really good leader.
"There were talks at one stage of him being on the fringes of the Germany squad while we were in the Premier League, which shows how good he was, and he repaid his transfer fee several times over.
"He's a club legend, and scored the penalty that got us to the Premier League in 2017."
The defender played the majority of his time under David Wagner, who opted to pair the German alongside current Brentford defender Zanka, where they played alongside each other for two Premier League seasons.
In the 2017/18 season, the pairing's defensive efforts kept the Terriers in the Premier League, in which Zanka kept 10 clean sheets with Schindler claiming 9.
After the opening few games of the 2017/18 season, there were talks of Schindler being on the fringes of the German national team.
Wagner said in 2017: "No. He has played six Premier League games and six outstanding ones, but if the question is about being a German international, I think everyone should calm down.
"I give him no pressure, he's been outstanding since he arrived, and he's such a good character, so we'll give him all the support he needs to continue."
The German call up never came unfortunately, but his dedication to Huddersfield remained throughout the rest of his time in Yorkshire.
Being the club record fee holder at the time was a heavy burden. Now, of course, that belongs to Terence Kongolo, who signed from AS Monaco for £17.5 million, completely trumping Schindler's fee, but that just shows how good of a signing he was.
Kongolo partnered Schindler mainly in the 2018/19 season, but it didn't have the same effect as what he had with Zanka.
The club's chairman Phil Hodgkinson, said that "he will always be considered among the greats of Huddersfield Town."
