EFL pundit and former England international Carlton Palmer has said that Leicester City may have to let Wilfred Ndidi leave the club in the summer, amid reported interest from a whole host of Premier League clubs.

The Foxes are currently under intense financial pressure from the Premier League after they were charged last month for breaching the league’s Profit and Sustainability rules. They are claimed to have failed to comply with their financial regulations for the three-year cycle ending in 2022/23, before they were relegated last season.

This has led to rumours of players leaving the club in the summer transfer window, as they look to balance the books.

One of the players under heavy speculation to leave the club is defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi. According to HITC, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Brighton and Wolves are all interested in signing the 27-year-old this summer.

Ndidi is set to be out of contract at the end of the season.

Carlton Palmer suggests that Leicester may be forced to let Ndidi leave

Speaking exclusively to FLW, Palmer said: “Wilfred Ndidi, he is attracting a lot of interest, a lot of attention, from Premier League clubs. Spurs, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Wolves to name four. Wilfred Ndidi is out of contract in the summer. Leicester have a major problem because they face points deductions and possibly a fine for breaching financial fair play rules. They may also have to sell players and there is talk of Dewsbury-Hall maybe having to be sold. But we will have to wait and see.

“He has been an integral part this season, although he has picked up some injuries, he has done really well for them. But with Ndidi’s huge wages of (an estimated) £75,000 a week, Leicester may choose to offload him in the summer and bring their wage bill down.

“Leicester have gone back to the top of the table, and they will have to assess their situation because it could be that they have to sell Dewsbury-Hall to balance the books and may also have to let Ndidi go on the type of money he is earning, so they do not get hampered with the fair play rules for next season.

“It will be a bitter blow, but five clubs are keeping tabs on him, and there is reported interest from abroad as well with the likes of Barcelona. But this is the problem when the clubs overspend, and do not stick to the guidelines that are set and these sanctions have to be put in place, and at some point it will cost the club.”

Ndidi is highly likely to depart Leicester

Leicester’s financial issues are set to take a huge toll on the club’s playing squad in the summer.

The Foxes are currently top of the Championship, looking to earn promotion straight back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. But no matter what division they are in, they are set to be under heavy financial constraints.

With that in mind, Ndidi may be forced to leave. He is one of the highest earners at the club, and Leicester probably will not be able to afford to keep him on.

Ndidi has been at the King Power Stadium since January 2017, when he joined from Belgian side Genk, and has gone on to make over 250 appearances for the club since.

It will be a bittersweet end to his time at the Foxes if he does leave, but Ndidi will be relishing the chance to play in the Premier League once again.
