The summer transfer window saw a total of €6.6bn in sales with some of the biggest names in the game going on to pastures new.

But which clubs excelled during the off-season and, in a word, ‘won’ the transfer market?

Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain have finally moved on from their Galáctico model.

This summer saw big names like Neymar, Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos all leaving with Kylian Mbappé winning out in the battle of the superstars.

Les Parisiens have hitched their horse to the youngster’s wagon and have moulded this side in his image.

Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembélé have been brought in to form a younger, fitter, hungrier and very Bleus attack.

Whilst Kang-in Lee, Lucas Hernandez, Milan Skriniar and Manuel Ugarte look like incredibly smart additions behind them.

And with the no-nonsense Luis Enrique in charge, PSG might finally be able to do what they’ve been threatening for years.

In: Randal Kolo Muani (Frankfurt €95m); Manuel Ugarte (Sporting €60m); Ousmane Dembélé (Barcelona, €50m); Lucas Hernández (Bayern Munich, €45m); Bradley Barcola (Lyon, €45m); Kang-in Lee (Mallorca, €22m); Milan Skriniar (Inter, Free); Marco Asensio (Real Madrid, Free); Gonçalo Ramos (Benfica, Loan)

Out: Neymar (Al-Hilal, €90m); Abdou Diallo (Al-Arabi, €15m); Mauro Icardi (Galatasaray, €10m); Gini Wijnaldium (Al-Ettifaq, €8m); Leandro Paredes (Roma, €2m); Renato Sanches (Roma, Loan); Lionel Messi (Inter Miami, Free); Sergio Ramos (Sevilla, Free)

Milan

Gazzetta dello Sport’s front page on September 2 said it best: “New signings pay off,” read their headline with Milan’s arrivals instantly finding their feet.

The pink paper isn’t backwards in coming forwards when a club in its home city drops a clanger.

But the Milan sports daily couldn’t have been more effusive this week with its front page splash and subsequent editorial.

After three games, the Rossoneri are three from three, having scored eight goals and conceded only two.

The Milan hierarchy have, quite sensibly, kept faith with Stefano Piolo and backed him in the summer market with a host of intriguing new arrivals.

Chief amongst those were Chelsea duo Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Shut out in west London, the attacking pair have been given a new lease of life at San Siro with the Curva Sud already warming to their Captain America.

In: Christian Pulisic (Chelsea, €20m); Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal, €20m); Yunus Musah (Valencia, €20m); Tijjani Reijnders (AZ, €19m); Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea, €16m); Noak Okafor (RB Salzburg, €14m); Marco Pellegrino (Platense, €3,5m); Luka Romero (Lazio, Free); Luka Jovic (Fiorentina, Free)

Out: Sandro Tonali (Newcastle, €65m); Charles De Ketelaere (Atalanta, Loan); Alexis Saelemaekers (Bologna, Loan); Ante Rebic (Besiktas, Loan); Divock Origi (Nottingham Forest, Loan); Matteo Gabbia (Villarreal)

West Ham

In an inflated market, finding value is perhaps the hardest thing of all.

There are plenty of good players out there, but getting ones that won’t break the bank is the trick of a good scouting team.

That though, is made even harder when you’ve just sold your star player for €110m and teams around the world know you have nine-figures burning a whole in your pocket.

Thus was the predicament facing West Ham this summer with the Hammers looking to replace the consistently impressive Declan Rice.

But boy did they do just that.

After a slow start to the summer, sporting director Mark Noble and technical director Tim Steidten brought in Edson Álvarez and Mohamed Kudus from Ajax and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.

Three brilliant midfielders who can form a new spine to their side and help kick the east London club on to greater heights.

Ins: Mohammed Kudus (Ajax, €45m); Edson Alvarez (Ajax, €40m); James Ward-Prowse (Southampton, €35m); Konstantinos Mavropanos (Stuttgart, €25m

Outs: Declan Rice (Arsenal, €110m); Gianluca Scamacca (Atalanta, €30m); Arthur Masuaku (Besiktas, undisclosed); Manuel Lanzini (River Plate, free); Nikola Vlasic (Torino, €15m)

Bayer Leverkusen

Who can challenge Bayern Munich this season and stop the Bavarian giants winning their 12th Bundesliga title in a row?

With Borussia Dortmund struggling early on and RB Leipzig losing a whole host of talented stars, the mantle is arguably being left to Bayer Leverkusen.

But with Xabi Alonso at the helm and some lateral-thinking in the market, Die Werkself are genuine title contenders this term.

Granit Xhaka and Jonas Hofmann have been brought in to add some experience to this young squad but it’s the arrival of Victor Boniface that most intrigues.

The Nigerian striker has already scored five in four games and looks right at home at the BayArena.

Their trip to the Allianz Arena on September 15 really can’t come round quickly enough.

Ins: Nathan Tella (Southampton, €23m); Victor Boniface (Union SG, €20m); Granit Xhaka (Arsenal, €15m); Jonas Hofmann (Mönchenglabach, €10m); Arthur (America, €7m); Matej Kovar (Man Utd, €5m); Josip Stanisic (Bayern, Loan)

Outs: Moussa Diaby (Aston Villa, €55m); Mitchel Bakker (Atalanta, €10m); Kerem Demirbay (Galatasary, €4m); Ayman Azhil (Dortmund, Free); Salim Hadouchi (Köln, Free); Jung In-gyom (Gladbach, Free)

Have Real Madrid won the transfer window? Yes.

And the reason why can be given in just two words: Jude Bellingham.

With every passing game, the €103m Los Blancos paid Borussia Dortmund for the Englishman looks like more and more of a bargain.

After impressing in the Bundesliga, Bellingham has arrived in Spain and taken LaLiga by storm.

The 20-year-old is already indispensable to Carlo Ancelotti and has repaid the early faith put in him with five goals in four appearances.

An astonishing deal by Florentino Pérez for a truly astonishing footballer.

Ins: Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund, €103m); Arda Güler (Fenerbahçe, €20m); Fran Garcia (Rayo Vallecano, €5m); Kepa (Chelsea, Loan); Joselu (Espanyol, €5m)

Outs: Karim Benzema (Al-Ittihad, Free); Marco Asensio (PSG, Free); Mariano Diaz (Sevilla, Free); Alvaro Odriozola (Real Sociedad, €3m); Eden Hazard (Released)
