Always a topic of discussion at Bristol Rovers, we've looked at four strikers Bristol Rovers might consider featuring Ellis Harrison

It's another transfer window where a striker is at the top of the conversation for Bristol Rovers supporters as the Gas get set for their first game back in League Two following their relegation from League One last campaign.

There’s been plenty of speculation as usual as to who is or isn’t going to join the Gas up front during the summer, including over the likes of former Gas players Jonson Clarke-Harris and Ellis Harrison.

With Bristol Rovers suggesting that they would like Promise Omochere to be the principal striker, the potential signings we are about to list may be more of a support act rather than your 20-goal-a-season ace. Nonetheless, with a lack of goals a talking point at Rovers, anyone who can find the net on a semi-regular basis could be just the difference.

Below, Football League World looks at four potential strikers Rovers may look at recruiting.

Ellis Harrison

The former Bristol Rovers man has been subject to a lot of speculation this summer with suggestions the 31-year-old could be heading back to BS7. Harrison left Rovers to sign for Ipswich Town in a deal believed to be worth around £750,000 back in July 2018 and has since played for clubs including Portsmouth, MK Dons and Walsall.

It would be a move welcomed by Gasheads with Harrison remaining a much-loved former player. The Welshman made over 200 appearances for the Gas and was on the scoresheet in the Conference play-off final against Grimsby Town, grabbing the equaliser, sparking a dramatic finale in favour of the Gas.

Harrison certainly comes with plenty of experience, including 131 appearances in League Two, scoring 24 times with seven assists.

Sam Cosgrove

Most recently with Barnsley, 28-year-old centre-forward Sam Cosgrove is currently available as a free agent and has a decent pedigree behind him having started with Everton’s youth team before playing for clubs including Aberdeen where he scored 47 goals in 103 appearances. The Englishman has also played for Birmingham City, Shrewsbury Town, AFC Wimbledon, and Plymouth Argyle.

While Cosgrove doesn't have a huge amount of League Two experience, he has achieved 22 goal contributions in 123 appearances in League One.

Cosgrove, like Harrison, is one of a number of players to have been included in the PFA Development Squad in pre-season.

Tyreece Simpson

St Kitts and Nevis international Tyreece Simpson has been subject to a bid from an unnamed fellow League Two side this summer and, according to reports, may be on course for an exit from his current club Stevenage this transfer window.

Simpson is only 23 and has played 45 times in League Two, scoring 10 times with three assists. More impressive you might say than his three-goal return from 63 games in League One. Simpson has been in the West Country before enjoying a spell with Swindon Town during which he claimed 11 goals and three assists in 30 matches.

Rovers would be required to part with some money for this deal and have already said they intend to let Promise Omochere have the opportunity to be the marksman he was brought in to be.

Jack Aitchison

Another player who would likely require a fee is versatile 25-year-old attacker Jack Aitchison. With 22 goal contributions in 59 appearances as a centre-forward, according to transfermarkt.co.uk, the Scotsman would be a handy addition to the Pirates’ ranks. Aitchison has made 100 appearances in League Two, scoring 11 times with nine assists.

Currently, with League One Exeter City, there will be questions about whether Aitchison will want to step down a division. However, should Rovers start the season well, there may well be more of a carrot to join a promotion challenger.
