L’Équipe report today that next season’s Trophée des Champions – the season opener that pits the Ligue 1 champions against the Coupe de France winners – is set to take place in Thailand, with the league authorities expected to confirm the choice in tomorrow’s board meeting.
The fixture has been held abroad since 2009, with Montreal, Shenzhen and Tanger notably hosting twice, while the last two years have seen the first game of the new campaign held in Tel Aviv.
Miami had emerged as a potential candidate for this year’s game, but the LFP then looked to Asia for venues, notably as Paris Saint-Germain are set to go east for their pre-season summer tour. Japan – a possible destination for PSG’s tour – was seen as a prospective host, before the organisation ended up choosing Thailand.
The trophy has been won by the current Ligue 1 leaders in every year since 2013, barring a defeat to then-title holders Lille at the start of last season
