There was plenty to remember from the 2022/23 Premier League season.

The top end of the table was given a serious shake-up. Arsenal challenged for the league title, Liverpool dropped out of the top four, Tottenham Hotspur failed to qualify for Europe entirely, and Chelsea….well, no one can really explain what happened there.

And there was also plenty of change down the bottom. All three newly-promoted clubs avoided the drop, while the more established likes of Southampton, Everton and Leicester City found themselves in a relegation battle.

But of course, some things didn’t change. Manchester City lifted their third league title in a row and their fifth in six years.

Here is our Team of the Season from a bizarre campaign.

GK – Bernd Leno (Fulham) – The arrival of Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal saw the end of Bernd Leno’s time at the Emirates Stadium. He has since moved to Fulham, where he has been given a new lease of life.

The German international has been a huge part of the Whites’ relative success. As per FotMob, he has prevented the most goals this season, conceding 51 from an expected goals of 61.5.

RB – Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United) – At Newcastle United, Kieran Trippier represents a bit more than just a good footballer.

He was the first signing of the post-Mike Ashley era and a signal of the ambition that had been missing at St James’ Park for well over a decade.

This season, the 32-year-old has been one of the Magpies’ standouts. In his 38 appearances, he has scored one, assisted seven and helped keep 16 clean sheets as Newcastle conceded just 31 goals.

CB – Sven Botman (Newcastle United) – Of course, Trippier didn’t keep all those clean sheets on his own. Newcastle boast the joint-best defensive record in the league, and the addition of Sven Botman has been a huge contributor to this.

Botman has featured in all but two of the Magpies’ league games this term. In this time, he has helped keep 13 clean sheets, conceding 30.

CB – Ruben Dias (Manchester City) – While Man City’s frontline often catches the eye, their defence also plays a massive role in their success. This season, they have conceded the joint-fewest in the league with 33.

Ruben Dias is the main man at the heart of the Cityzens’ defence. He has featured 26 times, keeping nine clean sheets and conceding 16.

LB – Pervis Estupinan (Brighton & Hove Albion) – When Marc Cucurella was sold to Chelsea for £60 million last season, many people questioned whether Brighton & Hove Albion could find an adequate replacement.

In came Pervis Estupinan from Villarreal, who has impressed in his debut campaign.

The Ecuadorian has made an impact at both ends of the pitch. From 35 appearances, he has one goal, five assists and ten clean sheets, helping the Seagulls to a club-record sixth place.

RM – Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – In many ways, Mohamed Salah is a victim of his own standards. We’ve seen him win three Golden Boots, a Playmaker Award and two PFA Player of the Season awards, while also setting the previous record for most goals in a single Premier League season. In comparison, this year seems fairly weak.

The former Chelsea man has scored 19 goals and assisted 12, making him the fourth-top scorer and the second-leading creator. Ask yourself this – if any ordinary winger had put up numbers like this, would you leave him out of your Team of the Season?

CM – Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) – For the fourth time in his career, Kevin De Bruyne has ended a Premier League season as the division’s top playmaker. This term, he assisted 16 goals, four clear of Salah.

On top of this, he has notched seven goals – his fourth-best in England. It’s been another sensational year for the Belgian.

CM – Martin Odegaard (Arsenal) – Everyone’s known about Martin Odegaard’s talent for a while now. Despite this, not many expected him to reach the level that he’s shown this year.

The playmaker was Arsenal’s top scorer this year, as well the top-scoring midfielder in the league with 15. Along with seven assists, Odegaard has been one of the Premier League’s most impressive players.

LM – Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) – After a disappointing campaign last year, Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United seemed to be up in the air. Erik ten Hag has given him a chance to flourish, and he is reaping the rewards.

The Englishman has hit 17 goals and assisted a further five. This includes crucial strikes against bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool and three across the two fixtures against Arsenal.

ST – Erling Haaland (Manchester City) – 36 goals in 35 appearances. THIRTY-SIX GOALS IN THIRTY-FIVE APPEARANCES. His tally speaks for itself.

The Norwegian has smashed the Premier League’s goal record and looks set for a clean sweep on all individual awards. And at just 22 years of age, there ought to be plenty more to come.

ST – Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) – The form of Haaland has somewhat overshadowed the phenomenal output of Harry Kane this term. Despite Tottenham Hotspur’s underwhelming campaign, their star striker has had a season to remember.

The England captain hit a personal best of 30 league goals. This was enough to see him surpass Wayne Rooney and become the Premier League’s second-top scorer ever, as well as Spurs’ all-time top marksman.
