The regular 2022/23 Championship season is finally over after Monday’s Gameweek 46 dropped the curtain on one of the most intense campaigns in European club football.

Burnley’s overwhelming 3-0 home victory over bottom-half underachievers Cardiff City saw the Clarets become only the fourth side in second-tier history to hit a 100-point milestone.

Despite mathematically sealing Premier League promotion a month ago, Vincent Kompany’s side finished the regular season on a high, stringing together three straight wins to complete the campaign with 101 points.

Second-placed Sheffield United eked out a 2-1 triumph at 17th-placed Birmingham City in a dead-rubber to cap off a successful season in style following a 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Luton Town and Middlesbrough already had third and fourth place in the bag before the final matchday, which may have let complacency move in on Monday.

While the Hatters could only manage an uneventful scoreless draw against Hull City in their final Championship match in front of a sold-out Kenilworth Road, Boro’s home clash against Coventry City was one of the season-defining fixtures.

Michael Carrick’s team fought back from an early deficit to hold the Sky Blues to a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Riverside Stadium, but it was still enough to earn the visitors a place in the Championship play-offs.

Mark Robins’ side sealed a fifth-place finish with a nervy stalemate in the Teesside tussle, becoming only the third side since 1968/69 to finish in the top six after going winless in their opening seven matches.

Middlesbrough and Coventry will meet again in the first leg of their play-offs semi-final tie next week, but the Sky Blues will enjoy home comforts in that encounter.

Sunderland, who pipped Blackburn Rovers and Millwall to the final play-off position courtesy of a 3-0 demolition of Preston North End, became the last side to qualify for the upcoming post-season fixtures.

Millwall appeared in the driver’s seat when they strolled to a 3-1 lead at home to Blackburn before Rovers turned the game on its head to run out 4-3 victors.

But despite taking home all three points, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side failed to overcome Sunderland due to an inferior goal difference, with both teams completing the season on 69 points.

The Lions were in cruise control of their destiny at half-time, but Rovers’ stunning second-half performance condemned them to a heartbreaking eighth-place finish.

Rovers were left to rue controversial late goals conceded in recent games, which scuppered their hopes of bagging one of the play-off places.
