Burnley had a huge summer window under new manager Vincent Kompany in which the first team squad was radically overhauled.

The Belgian has overseen a very positive start to life at Turf Moor with the Clarets currently top of the Championship table.

Automatic promotion now looks all but guaranteed with such a massive points advantage over the chasing pack.

But anyone expecting a quiet January would have received the wrong impression from the Lancashire club.

A high number of ins and outs means there was plenty of winter transfer activity to unpack.

Here are two things we clearly learned about Burnley’s business from the last month…

Revolution not evolution continues

Overhauling the first team squad is a thorough and difficult process in which the entirety of the team can change.

Kompany has opted to mould a new team to his liking in order to help the team’s transition to a more progressive style of play.

This continued in January with the departures of Matt Lawton, Kevin Long, Ashley Westwood, and the attempted sale of Ashley Barnes.

These older, long-standing members of the club have departed without much impact, with the trio having not even featured in the side in the league all season.

This highlights how quickly Kompany has moved on from Sean Dyche’s squad that survived six campaigns in the Premier League.

Even with Barnes ultimately staying, it is likely his game time will be significantly reduced with the additions of Lyle Foster and Michael Obafemi.

His contract is up this summer and he looks likely to depart.

How many points did Burnley amass during their title-winning 2015/16 Championship campaign?

Not settling for what they have

Burnley’s position in the table meant the club could have taken it relatively easy in the transfer market. Why shake up a winning formula?

But Kompany has persisted with changes to the team as he looks to build a squad that is Premier League-ready.

The additions of Foster and Obafemi targeted the team’s biggest weakness in attack and brought in younger options that could lead the line for years to come.

The arrivals of Hjalmar Ekdal and Ameen Al-Dakhil also signal a forward-thinking that should give the team good preparation for next season.

With Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jordan Beyer only at the club on loan, bringing in permanent arrivals as defensive backup will give them time to bed into their new surroundings and should fill out the squad nicely ahead of what is likely to be a Premier League campaign in 2023-24.
