2 players who could follow Sean Raggett out of Portsmouth this summer

Highlights

  • Portsmouth will likely release players out of contract this summer, especially if they secure promotion to the Championship.
  • With potential financial gain from promotion, new player recruitment and getting rid of fringe players are key.
  • Players like Ryan Schofield and Josh Martin may be on the way out, given their lack of playing time and contract situations.

As usual, as the season comes to a close, teams will move on certain players who see their deals expire at the end of the campaign.

Whether the players in question have struggled for playing time, aren't worth a new deal due to their age or won't sign a new contract as they look to force a move, nearly every club in the country will release players this summer.

Portsmouth are no different, and have a number of players out of contract this summer, with some inevitably being moved on, particularly if the club win promotion to the Championship.

John Mousinho's side are currently top of the League One table and are well-placed to return to the Championship for the first time since 2012.

If the club win promotion, it'll make them a more attractive club to join and will strengthen them financially, so they'll likely recruit in the summer to bolster their squad. Getting fringe, out of contract players off their books will be key as it frees up space in their squad.

Sean Raggett is one such player who, despite featuring regularly this term, could depart if they reach the Championship. The defender will drop back down the pecking order once some of those on the injury list return and Pompey may think twice about giving him a new contract, with his current deal up this summer.

1 Ryan Schofield

Former Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Ryan Schofield joined Pompey last summer on a one-year deal but has struggled to nail down a place in the club's starting XI.

He's featured six times in cup competitions, but it's been a different story in the league. He started the season as second choice to Will Norris, but has been demoted to third choice since Matt Macey arrived in January.

Now third choice at Fratton Park, it's been a hugely frustrating campaign for the 24-year-old, who has 33 Championship appearances for Huddersfield to his name, so will understandably feel that he has a lot to offer.

Pompey's chief executive, Rich Hughes, admitted to The News that the club were looking to loan Schofield out in the January transfer window, but a move never materialised, and the player remains at the club.

Given Pompey have two players ahead of him in the pecking order, and they wanted to loan him out in January, it seems very likely that he'll depart in the summer.

Schofield has experience of playing in the Championship, and at 24, he shouldn't struggle to find a new club at EFL level.

2 Josh Martin

Former Norwich City man Josh Martin joined the club on a short-term deal in November which was initially set to expire in January.

However, Pompey extended his deal until the end of the season during the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old winger started his first two games at the club but has featured from the bench in most games since then, often playing just a few minutes at the end of the game.

Whilst Martin's signing has given Pompey some strength in depth as they battle for the League One title, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him move on in the summer if the club win promotion.

Martin began his career at Arsenal before moving to Norwich and had EFL loan spells at MK Dons, Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley whilst at the Canaries.

At 22, and with an impressive CV of EFL football under his belt, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Martin picked up by another League One club in the summer if Pompey are promoted and Martin is released.
