A look at two players who could also leave Bolton Wanderers after the sale of captain George Thomason to Wrexham.

In what has been a busy summer transfer window for Bolton Wanderers already, it shows no signing of stopping or slowing down as the League One campaign comes into view.

Steven Schumacher is experiencing his first full transfer window as Bolton boss, as the Trotters try to put their disappointing eighth-place finish in the third-tier last season behind them.

The club have seen several previously key first-teamers depart, such as Nathan Baxter, Ricardo Santos and Gethin Jones, whilst Aaron Collins was sold to Milton Keynes Dons.

Another major sale has seen captain George Thomason recently join Wrexham for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.2 million, and the outgoings may well not be done there either.

Attacking duo Klaidi Lolos and Dan Nlundulu have both already been told to find new clubs and didn’t travel with the squad to Marbella for their pre-season training camp, but they may not be the only ones still to leave the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Football League World has looked a couple more seemingly key first-teamers who could well be following Thomason and the others out of the door in Lancashire.

Will Forrester

Will Forrester arrived at Bolton for an undisclosed fee from Port Vale in the summer of 2022 and was immediately seemingly viewed as a project player that would feature semi-regularly in the first-team.

His performances have been up and down at Bolton, with a clear ability on the ball matched with a defensive tenacity and aggression, but his propensity for mistakes and consistent injury issues have often held him back from establishing himself as an out-and-out key man at Bolton.

Forrester did get a good run in the side when Schumacher initially arrived, but he may well now find himself down the pecking order as Wanderers switch to a back four shape and the likes of George Johnston, Chris Forino, Eoin Toal and Richard Taylor sit ahead of him, as well as even B team player Sam Inwood.

Forrester has already been linked with a move to Stockport County this summer as they seek to find a replacement for Fraser Horsfall, who joined Blackpool on a free transfer.

His possible departure would be one that would receive a mixed response from Bolton supporters as there is clear potential in the defender, but performances such as in the 5-0 loss against the reportedly interested Stockport last season really do highlight the low floor he possesses, too.

Josh Sheehan

As Bolton finished third and eventually lost in the League One play-off final to Oxford United at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, Josh Sheehan was named Wanderers’ Player of the Year.

Playing in a slightly deeper role, the Welshman thrived to such an extent that he was named captain of his nation for a friendly against Gibraltar a month after the end of that campaign.

Capable of being a goal threat but also dictating tempo, Sheehan has established himself as one of the best midfielders in League One, as well as one of the best players to watch with his silky style of play.

However, like a lot of the Bolton squad in the last few seasons, he has often flattered to deceive with criticism of his outright effectiveness in open play, not necessarily playing the decisive pass or beginning decisive moves, whilst also often being fairly weak or at least average in the tackle or breaking up of play.

As Schumacher attempts to make his side more robust all over the pitch, and with the addition of Xavier Simons, it could well be that Sheehan finds himself no longer a guaranteed starter.
