It has been an open secret for some time, but now it’s official: Lukas Kwasniok has been unveiled as the new head coach of Bundesliga returnees 1. FC Köln.
The 43-year-old joins the Billy Goats from SC Paderborn and has signed a contract until 2028.
“We’re very pleased to have secured Lukas Kwasniok as the new head coach of 1. FC Köln. He proved over several years in Paderborn that he can develop teams, play attractive and successful football, and guide young players to higher levels. His style of play, energy, and ambition fit perfectly with what we envision for FC in the Bundesliga," said FC Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler
"In our detailed and intensive discussions with Lukas, we became increasingly convinced that his personality, conviction, and approach make him an excellent fit for 1. FC Köln and the city of Cologne. We’re confident that he’s the right coach to further develop and sustainably stabilize the club in the Bundesliga.”
Kwasniok is embracing the opportunity.
“I had considered taking a break,” he admitted.
“But when Thomas Kessler got in touch, it was immediately clear: if I get the chance to work in Cologne, I absolutely want to do it. It’s an incredible club and a huge opportunity.
"It’ll be an amazing feeling to stand on the touchline in the Bundesliga for FC for the first time. We want to make waves with this team.”
