Erik ten Hag handed competitive debuts to summer recruits André Onana and Mason Mount in Monday’s curtain-raiser at Old Trafford.

But the visitors enjoyed the better first-half chances with Pablo Sarabia going close as his shot was deflected narrowly wide by Raphael Varane.

Matheus Cunha attempted to go one better when he dragged an effort just past Onana’s right-hand post after dancing through the Red Devils’ defence.

The Brazil international also spurned a gilt-edged opening after the interval by hooking the ball against the far post unchallenged from mere yards out.

Ten Hag rang the changes as Mount and Alejandro Garnacho were withdrawn in attempts to stem the tide back in the Red Devils’ favour.

Within eight minutes, the hosts had snatched the lead courtesy of Varane’s instinctive header from an Aaron Wan-Bissaka looping delivery.

The hosts still had to weather further pressure from Gary O’Neil’s side as Saša Kalajdžić, Fábio Silva and Hwang Hee-chan were all denied in the closing stages.

Deep in stoppage time, Onana avoided conceding a penalty as VAR ruled that his collision with Kalajdžić did not constitute a clear foul on the striker.

United move up to seventh in the Premier League table with their victory while Wolves sit just outside the relegation zone after the opening weekend of games.
