England Women won their first ever major trophy when they overcame Germany after extra-time in front of a packed out Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Lionesses substitute Ella Toone broke the deadlock with a brilliant goal just after the hour mark, before Germany’s Lina Magull equalised to take the final to extra-time.

And in the extra period, it was another substitute, Chloe Kelly, who wrote her name into national folklore by scoring the Euro 2022 winning goal.

The final was played in front of 87,192 spectators – a record for a UEFA final.

Scorers: Toone 62′, Kelly 110′; Magull 79′

England boss Sarina Wiegman named an unchanged side for the sixth consecutive match, with Golden Boot chasing Beth Mead named on the right flank.

But Germany were dealt a huge blow before the game when their captain and leading goalscorer at the tournament Alexandra Popp was forced to withdraw after sustaining a muscular injury in the warm-up. Lea SchĂźller replaced her in the starting line-up.

The first chance of the game fell to England’s Ellen White, but her header at the back post was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Merle Frohms.

It took until the 19th minute for the next attempt on target, when Lucy Bronze got her head to a corner, but Frohms was again equal to it.

Next it was Germany’s turn to go close, when a dangerous corner delivery in the 25th minute had to be scrambled off the line before it ended up in the grateful arms of goalkeeper Mary Earps.

White had another good chance in the 38th minute but having been tee’d up superbly by Mead, England’s all-time leading goalscorer could only lash over the bar.

Germany made a substitution at half-time, with Tabea Waßmuth brought on to replace Jule Brand, and the winger almost made an instant impact when she latched onto a mistake from England’s Millie Bright, but her tame effort was gathered up by Earps.

Moments later Lina Magull had Germany’s best chance of the game so far, but her toe poke landed just wide of the post.

England then made a double substitution, with Alessia Russo and Ella Toone on for White and Fran Kirby.

And then, in the 62nd minute, came the big breakthrough when Toone latched on to a superb ball over the top from Keira Walsh before lobbing brilliantly over the goalkeeper to open the scoring.

The Lionesses were then dealt a blow when their leading goalscorer at the tournament Mead had to hobble off injured, with Chloe Kelly on to replace her.

Magull then went close to equalising for Germany when she hammered a shot against the post, before Earps pounced on the rebound.

But Magull did get her goal in the 79th minute, when she ghosted in at the near post to convert Waßmuth’s cross for 1-1.

Neither side was able to edge the contest in normal time, and so it went to extra-time.

The first half of extra time yielded little by way of chances, but in the 110th minute England went back in front, when a corner somehow found its way to Kelly to poke home, before ripping off her shirt in celebration.

Germany pushed for another equaliser but England soaked up the remaining minutes to clinch their first major honour, and the nation’s first since 1966.
