Reigning European champions England have star-studded France, 2017 winners the Netherlands and something of a derby against a Wales side at their first ever major tournament.

The Favourites

England will be expected to top the group and go all the way as they look to retain their title, but it's been a bumpy road to Switzerland. There were some shock results in the last couple of years, including defeat to Belgium back in April and a draw with Portugal in February, and this England squad arrives without Mary Earps, Millie Bright and Fran Kirby, all recently retired from the international game.

None of that will be considered an excuse if they don't win games though.

The Key Clash: France vs England

France have disappointed at recent tournaments, while England arrive at this one less imperious than they were at the last Euros and the 2023 World Cup. Is this finally time for France to stake their claim on the biggest of stages?

Maybe, maybe not, but the group game between the pair should have semi-final worthy quality and the result will likely decide which side of the bracket these two star-studded teams end up on.

Key Players

  • Georgia Stanway (England) - There is quality throughout the England team, but just how close Stanway will be to top form after her recent surgery will be central to their success: the midfielder's boundless energy, combined with her quality on the ball, keeps everything ticking over no matter how England are faring.
  • Grace Geyoro (France) - An all-round midfielder, Geyoro is a true box-to-box midfielder. France will look to her to grab games by the scruff of the neck, to win the ball back, then to crash the box and offer a threat at the other end of the pitch. If she performs well, France have every chance of dominating games against any side they come up against.
  • Vivianne Miedema (Netherlands) - A genius. It's been a difficult few seasons with injury, but the quality is undeniable: Miedema is one of the most complete forwards the women's game has ever seen. Equal parts world class goalscorer and world class creator, the whole tournament — and the Netherlands' chances — could look completely different if she hits form.
  • Jess Fishlock (Wales) - An icon in the women's game and the winner of an astounding 162 caps for her country, Fishlock is a two-time Champions League winner, a former NWSL MVP, and it will mean everything to her to finally play for Wales at a major tournament at 38. The heart of the Welsh team and the heartbeat of their midfield.

Predicted qualifiers
