Wolves 1 Newcastle 2 – Match ratings and comments on all Newcastle United players

We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Wolves 1 Newcastle 2.

After star turns from Isak, Gordon and Tonali in the international break, I was confident Newcastle would win this game, and for the first 20-odd minutes, my confidence increased.

However, we didn’t score, Wolves came on stronger, and they did. For the next 30 minutes or so, I was confident we’d lose.

Eddie made three changes at half time (and five in total), but unfortunately one of them was for Isak, who couldn’t continue.

It took a while for the rejigged team to work out how to adapt, but once they found their feet, Newcastle got better and better. I thought the introduction of Kieran Trippier made a difference.

Still, it took a couple of wonder strikes to get us the two goals, and some good goalkeeping from Nick Pope to preserve the three points.

Did we deserve those three points? Barely.

Do our performances so far this season reflect a team deserving of third place in the Premier League? No, but there we sit, level on points with Arsenal. They have to play Man City next week, so all we have to do is beat Fulham and we’ll be second (at least). I wouldn’t put it past us…

Nick Pope – 8

Many goalkeepers could distribute the ball better than Nick Pope but not many of them could command an area like he does. Nor could they make the saves he does.

He couldn’t do much about the Wolves goal, but other than that he was solid, and made a couple of very important saves.

Without him in goal at Molineux, Newcastle wouldn’t have got all three points

Tino Livramento – 6

In truth, Tino is one of those players who hasn’t fully integrated into the team. He needs to learn from Tripps about when to stick and when to twist.

Sometimes – this game was a good example – he pushes too far up the park and leaves space for the opposition to exploit. I’m not hating on him – he will prove to be a great signing.

Fabian Schar – 8

Glad to see him back.

Some might blame him for his part in the concession of Wolves’ goal, but I won’t. He was trying to mark two players, and the great Bobby Moore himself wouldn’t have read the dummy.

Anyway, if Fab was feeling bad, he redeemed himself with a strike as handsome as he is. OK, it took a deflection, but I’m going to say he meant it.

Dan Burn – 7

His lack of pace was exposed for the Wolves goal (although he’d been left exposed by his colleagues), but other than that, he did OK and helped keep Wolves at bay.

There’s a reason Eddie keeps picking him.

Lewis Hall – 7

Decent performance, but he’s still learning, and will get better.

As with Tino, needs to get better at recognising danger. He was way out of position for Wolves’ goal.

Other than that, he looked OK in defence and attack. Ended up playing centre forward, as he was too cramped up to move, and we had no subs left.

Sean Longstaff – 5

Our entire midfield was poor for a lot of the first half and Sean was a case in point.

Nothing came off for him and lost the ball for Wolves’ goal.

He’ll have better days but Eddie was right to sub him off at half time.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6

Maybe his jaunt to South America left him jaded but he took a long time to get into his stride.

He did, eventually, and as his performance improved, so did the team’s.

Joelinton – 5

Just wasn’t at it at all.

Gave the ball away several times and played like he had something on his mind.

Got a daft yellow card (his third in four games) and was deservedly hooked at half time.

Jacob Murphy – 7

Did quite well, in my opinion.

Pressed well, played a couple of good balls into the box, and had a decent shot tipped over.

Ended the game in the unlikely position of left wing-back in a back five. Never stopped for 90+ minutes.

It’s worth mentioning that he, Isak and Gordon got through a lot of work in the first half when our midfield were struggling.

Alexander Isak – 7

Looked good while he was on the park, saw more of the ball than he has done at times this season.

Couldn’t appear for the second half after sustaining a facial injury and the team took time to adjust.

With Wilson perennially injured and Osula not deemed ready, it emphasised how much we need him.

Anthony Gordon – 8

Much more like it.

He’s looked a bit half-hearted at times this season but he was at it from the get-go today.

Gave the Wolves defence a first-half roasting, grazed the post with a chance that only he could create.

He had to fill the gap that Isak left in the second half but stuck at it.

Harvey Barnes – 8

He doesn’t score tap-ins, does he?

Another excellent strike that won us the game and not for the first time.

He probably felt miffed to be on the bench but I do think that he and Gordon are at their best in identical positions. However, he seldom lets us down and his performance and goal made the difference

Sandro Tonali – 7

Eased his way into the game without doing anything spectacular but was much more composed than the midfielders that were subbed off.

A couple of neat touches and I’m sure he’ll just get better

Joe Willock – 6

Glad that his injury wasn’t too serious.

We’ll need him – I think Newcastle can do something this season with the full roster of midfielders to choose from.

He was lively and positive and showed glimpses of what he can do. He just needs to stay injury-free and we’ll have an important player back

Kieran Trippier – 7

I thought he made a difference when he came on.

I’ve said before that he seems to be able to dictate play from the right back position, which sounds unlikely, but is true.

I think he gave those around him a sense of calm and assurance. I can see why Eddie wouldn’t sanction a sale.

Lloyd Kelly – 6

Only played 12 minutes or so including those added on, but they were important minutes, as Wolves were laying siege to the Newcastle goal.

He slotted in well as we went to a back five and Hall had been moved out of harm’s way. I think he’ll prove to be an asset.
