Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior believes Djordje Petrovic is getting better every day and backed him to become a “great” player.

Petrovic joined Chelsea in the summer of 2023 from MLS side New England Revolution in a deal worth £14m and impressed last season.

The 25-year-old had to bide his time, but made the number one shirt his own after replacing the injured Robert Sanchez in December 2023.

Rosenior praises Petrovic

Many expected the Serbia international to continue as the club’s number one this season, but the decision was taken to go with Sanchez.

The Blues signed another two goalkeepers last summer in Filip Jorgensen and teenager Mike Penders, with Petrovic suddenly finding himself surplus to requirements.

The decision was taken to send him on loan to Strasbourg, and Petrovic has shone in Ligue 1 putting in a series of impressive performances.

The Serbian is currently on a run of four consecutive clean sheets, and reports have said he will return to Chelsea at the end of the season and compete for the number one shirt.

Rosenior has previously labelled Petrovic as world class and after their win against Auxerre on Sunday he was once again full of praise for the shot stopper.

“Petrovic is getting better by the day,” he said as cited on X.com.

“It’s very important in our game system. He is only 25 years old and will become a great player.”

Petrovic has kept seven clean sheets in 21 league appearances this season, with Strasbourg in contention to qualify for European football next season.

Petrovic’s form makes Chelsea’s decision to send him on loan look like the wrong one, although the club will argue otherwise, but it’s clear he will return a better player.

However, it still can’t be ruled out that he’ll be sold with one of him, Sanchez and Jorgensen needing to leave in the summer as all three can’t compete to be number one.
