SV Werder Bremen and attacking player Leon Opitz will go their separate ways for now. The 20-year-old has joined second-division side Karlsruher SC on loan with immediate effect. The deal was confirmed on Sunday by Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football at SVW.

“We’re convinced this loan is the right step for Leon to continue his development,” explained Niemeyer. “The aim is for him to gain regular game time at a high level in Karlsruhe – something we can’t guarantee him here at the moment. We wish Leon all the best for his time in Karlsruhe and will, of course, follow his progress closely.”

Opitz joined Werder’s academy from Hamburger SV in 2020 and has since made the step up to senior football. He has featured three times in the Bundesliga for the first team, while also making 30 appearances for the U23s in the Regionalliga Nord, scoring 16 goals.
