Manchester United were left ruing missed chances as Fulham ended their FA Cup journey with a penalty shootout win.
Ruben Amorim yet again trusted Ruben Amorim to spearhead the Red Devils attack and, yet again, the Danish forward delivered a frustrating performance, leading to question marks over his place in the United head coach’s plans.
The 22-year-old has endured a disastrous season, managing just two Premier League goals in 22 appearances.
Joshua Zirkzee, meanwhile, has appeared more composed with the ball at his feet but his finishing has also left a lot to be desired.
Ahead of the Mancunians clash with Fulham, Wayne Rooney talked about Danny Welbeck’s exploits at Brighton and Hove Albion and insisted that he would like to see his former teammate at United once again.
“Danny, he’s great to play alongside and if I’m being completely honest, I would probably still like to see him here playing for Manchester United,” said Rooney during BBC Match of the Day.
Welbeck left United for Arsenal under Louis van Gaal in a deal worth around £16 million in 2014.
The United academy product is enjoying a prolific stint at Brighton, having scored eight goals in all competitions this season despite limited minutes.
Most recently the 34-year-old made headlines with his 114th minute winner against Newcastle United in the FA Cup.
Erik ten Hag reportedly tried to sign the Englishman over the summer of 2024 so Rooney’s suggestion is far from outlandish.
The disappointing FA Cup encounter on Sunday did provide some encouragement to the United faithful going forward as Chido Obi delivered a promising cameo after replacing Hojlund early in the second half.
Having said that, Obi is still very young striker and Ineos would be wise to invest in a more experienced number nine to ease Amorim’s goalscoring woes.
