Marc Cucurella is one of the few Chelsea players who could hold their heads high after the Blues were beaten 2-1 at Stamford Bridge by Legia Warsaw.
He got his team’s goal – and had another ruled out. It was no surprise he was the man chosen to speak to TNT Sport after the game. His thoughts on the tie attempted to be positive, but there’s only so positive anyone can be in this context.
“We conceded two easy goals again. But we cannot speak about this. We cannot put excuses. We are Chelsea and we want to win all the games. Now we need to stay together,” the full back said.
“We know we have more games to play. We can finish in the Champions League positions… Now it’s not the time to complain. For sure, it’s not a good night for us. But the most important thing is we have the opportunity to play a semi-final.”
Many fans would say that there are more important things here than playing a Conference League semi finals. The total collapse of the winning mentality at this club despite £1.5bn spent, for one.
You can see Cucurella speaking in the clip embedded here:
Marc Cucurella fires in from close range.
“Well I try to help the team in the way that I can, this season I’ve had the opportunity to score more goals so I’m happy about that, but I’d prefer to win games than score goals.”
That’s the right attitude. Still, he should take some credit. He’s our top scorer since mid-December. Without him, there’s no telling where we’d be. But we need our attacking players back in form, not our left back scrapping tap ins.
That will require a major change in tactics from the manager, and a major improvement in form from those individuals we’re relying on.
