A miserable, toothless attack meant winless Eagles flying took flight

Tottenham produced surely their worst display of the season as they went down 1-0 to struggling Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s back-post finish settled a scrappy game and earned Palace a first league win of the season, easing the pressure on boss Oliver Glasner.

Spurs, though, continue to blow hot and cold.

Here’s how we rated the Spurs at Selhurst Park…

Guglielmo Vicario 6

Saved brilliantly to deny Adam Wharton, and also made stops from Mateta, Ismaila Sarr and Eze. Uncomfortable with the ball at his feet and did not look assured coming for crosses, but he was probably still a net positive for Spurs.

Pedro Porro 5

Struggled to pin down the mercurial Eze and was loose in possession from the very start.

Cristian Romero 5

His needless pass across his own box led to Palace's goal. He was erratic on the ball but made a couple of important interventions defensively.

Micky van de Ven 4

Lost possession for the Palace goal was lucky to avoid a red card for a last-man foul on Mateta midway through the second half.

Destiny Udogie 6

Created a good chance for Maddison and was probably the best of a bad bunch at the back for Spurs.

Yves Bissouma 6

Battled hard at the base of midfield but often turned his way into a Palace shirt or two before losing the ball.

Dejan Kulusevski 4

Came close to scoring with a close-range effort blocked by Dean Henderson. But crowded out of the game in his least effective display of the season.

James Maddison 4

Tested Henderson with a curling effort from outside the box but struggled to influence the game, as was outshone by his England rival Eberechi Eze.

Brennan Johnson 4

Inadvertently struck the post in what proved Spurs’ best chance of the afternoon. Otherwise a spectator for long periods, as Palace effectively cut off the visitors’ supply lines.

Mikey Moore 5

Showed a couple of glimpses of his quality but was largely peripheral, as his much-anticipated first Premier League start proved frustrating.

Dominic Solanke 6

Held up the ball impressively and looked in good touch on the rare occasions he found himself in space.

Pape Matar Sarr (Kulusevski 62’) 6

Added energy and running power but could not help Spurs to wrestle back control of the midfield.

Richarlison (Maddison 62’) 4

Looked rusty, and his one sight of goal was scuppered by a loose touch, allowing a defender to get back.

Timo Werner (Moore 62’) 5

Got into some decent positions but his final ball was off again.

Rodrigo Bentancur (Bissouma 87’) 5

Had a shot blocked in a late cameo.
