Tottenham Hotspur are once again casting their net across Europe as they look to reinforce their defensive line, with Juventus graduate Koni De Winter reportedly high on the list. As talkSPORT reveals, “Spurs have earmarked De Winter as a potential summer replacement for Atletico Madrid target Cristian Romero.” With Thomas Frank preparing for his first season in charge, the club appears keen to shape a long-term vision built around youth, promise and durability.

The 23-year-old Belgian’s journey has not been without its challenges. Despite making only two senior appearances for Juventus, loan spells at Empoli and then Genoa gave him the platform he needed. His most recent season saw him feature 26 times for Genoa, though he did suffer a hamstring setback.
“De Winter’s deal included an obligation to buy and he completed the permanent move after meeting certain conditions.” Now, with Inter Milan also showing interest, Spurs will need to act swiftly if they are to lure the Belgian international to north London.
Tottenham’s defensive evolution is already in motion. Kevin Danso has joined permanently from Lens, and the club has secured Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, plus Luka Vuskovic from Hajduk Split, whose deal was agreed nearly two years ago. This rearguard reshuffle underlines a clear ambition.

Meanwhile, “Spurs have seen their £50million bid for Mohammed Kudus rejected by West Ham.” After cooling interest in Eberechi Eze, they now face frustration in multiple positions.
De Winter’s Champions League eligibility and Belgian international status bolster his credentials. “The defender has also earned four caps with Belgium and has played in both of their 2026 World Cup qualifying matches so far.”
With Inter Milan circling, Spurs may have to move quickly and decisively, especially now that “Jarrad Branthwaite [has signed] fresh terms with Everton.”
There’s a buzz growing around Hotspur Way. Koni De Winter might not be a household name yet, but fans paying close attention to Serie A and Belgium’s national side know the quality is there. At just 23, De Winter has already played in two top Italian clubs and is knocking on the door for Belgium. He’s no stranger to adversity either, recovering from injury to still rack up 26 appearances last term.
What excites supporters most is the structure being put in place under Thomas Frank. De Winter, Danso, Vuskovic and Tel represent a clear pivot towards youth and athleticism. If Spurs manage to pull off this deal, especially ahead of a Champions League campaign, it would send a statement that they’re building something serious.
That said, the failed £50million bid for Kudus raises some concern. Creativity in attack is still an issue and while defence looks promising, balance across the pitch remains key. Antoine Semenyo might not be the answer, but if De Winter arrives, that’s one more piece of the puzzle secured.
