Rashford has struggled to sustain a fine run of form during the 2023/24 season, registering only eight goals and five assists in 40 games for the Red Devils.
Multiple reports on Monday revealed United are open to letting Rashford go as part of the club's summer rebuild plans, with Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund the only players they regard as off-limits.
Rashford, therefore, could be sold, but The Athletic claim this would depend on two variables coming to fruition at the same time.
The preference on United's end is to keep Rashford and help him rediscover his form from the 2022/23 season in which he tallied a career-best 30 goals and 10 assists in 56 games.

United manager Erik ten Hag has been publicly supportive of Rashford, who recently hit out at abuse he has received this season.
"I have a lot of sympathy for Rashy," Ten Hag said ahead of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Burnley. "Last year, he had a brilliant season, the best season in his career, 30 goals.
"This season he didn't give the performances and then people are very critical. I think we have to back him. Everyone should back him and push him to get back to the levels he was at last year.
"I think he needs support. We all know what he's capable of. We all have to support but also to push him. He can do better than he is doing this year and we have seen that last year when he was really brilliant."
