Just when you think things can’t get any worse, you find yourself uttering the words, “We are now relying on Spurs.”
Yes, Newcastle United fans relying on the team that are fighting it out with Manchester United to see who finishes fourth bottom of the Premier League.
If this was horse racing, both Spurs and Man U would be be the subject of a serious investigation under the non-triers rule this season, with numerous matches to be used in evidence.
Going into this final Premier League match of the weekend on Monday night, six of the top seven had already played, five of them winning and one losing. No need to say which club was the odd one out.
To avoid a totally disastrous weekend, Newcastle United fans needing Spurs to save it.
It was never going to end well.
Ahead of last night’s match, you do that thing, where you start and convince yourself that actually Spurs won’t lose this. You go through their team and it is full of internationals, expensive signings in many cases, a big squad of recognisable names, you think surely in front of their own fans they won’t simply rollover.
Within five minutes they had rolled over, then with sixteen minutes gone they had pretty much rolled off the pitch.
Nottingham Forest just doing the simple things but that is more than enough to beat this Spurs side so devoid of character and effort.
No real effort to charge down a poor clearance from a corner that landed on the edge of the penalty area, former Newcastle United midfielder and lifelong NUFC fan Elliot Anderson smashing it home.
Eleven minutes later and former Newcastle United striker Chris Wood rises unchallenged to head home six yards out.
Forest then just pretty much sat back and controlled the rest of the match, knowing how horrific Spurs are, when it comes to effort, desire and character.
When they did rouse themselves on the odd occasion and created a few decent efforts on goal, former Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels made crucial saves.
Just to rub it in, Richarlison then gave some very small false hope when pulling it back to 2-1 in the 87th minute. You just knew though that Spurs weren’t capable or willing, when it came to serving up a dramatic late comeback.
This is a weekend where Newcastle United and their fans simply need to put it behind us now and move on to the final five games.
These were the Saturday 19 April Premier League results:
Brentford 4 Brighton 2
Palace 0 Bournemouth 0
Everton 0 Man City 2 (Looking like a certain goalless draw, Man City scoring in the 84th minute and a second goal in added time)
West Ham 1 Southampton 1
Aston Villa 4 Newcastle 1
The Sunday 20 April Premier League results:
Fulham 1 Chelsea 2 (Fulham taking a first half lead and it should have been more. Then seven minutes left and Fulham coasting to a win, Chelsea score. Oh well, Chelsea only dropping two points instead of three, still all good. Third minute of added time and Chelsea get the winner.)
Ipswich 0 Arsenal 4
Man U 0 Wolves 1
Leicester 0 Liverpool 1
Monday 21 April
Spurs 1 Forest 2
After this round of PL games now completed, this is how the Premier League table looks on Tuesday (22 April) morning:
No need to panic, just need to keep cool heads.
Forest have completed a total nightmare of Premier League results this weekend for Newcastle United, Nuno’s team replacing NUFC in third.
The only focus now on next Saturday and a home game against Ipswich, who have lost 10 and won only one of their last 13 Premier League matches AND will be mathematically relegated for sure, unless winning at St James’ Park.
When I say ONLY focus, I will of course be keeping a keen eye on what happens with Man City v Villa tonight, what result should Newcastle United fans be hoping for here?
