Bayer Leverkusen are the German invincibles having gone a whole Bundesliga season unbeaten.
Never before has a club in Germany’s top flight gone a whole 34 matchdays without losing. So many times have Xabi Alonso’s men snatched victories and late draws from the jaws of defeat.
Think back to Augsburg away, VfB Stuttgart at home, Borussia Dortmund at home; the list goes on.
It goes without question that the B04 team of 2023/24 will go as the best team to ever grace the Bundesliga. They’ve done it by playing fantastic football, which Alonso has installed in just over a year in charge.
Upon reflection, the moment Germany and the world knew the Bundesliga was changing was Leverkusen’s 3-0 demolition of Bayern Munich in February.
It almost felt like the passing of the crown as the club that had dominated Germany for over a decade were completely out-battled, out-played, and out-classed.
As they lift their first-ever Bundesliga title, you can’t help but feel this is only a positive thing for the league (unless you’re a Bayern fan, of course).
Regardless of what happens in the summer with new signings and departures, the class of 2024 will not only go down in Leverkusen folklore but world football fairytale.
Of course, Leverkusen’s story does not end here. Next Wednesday, they travel to Dublin for the Europa League final and then to Berlin on Saturday for the DFB Pokal final.
In the space of a week, Leverkusen can complete an unbeaten treble.
It’s hard to find the words to describe such an achievement. So, let’s just sit back and enjoy the ride.
